I must confess to a bit of poetic burn-out this morning, so I’ve reverted to a poem I wrote last winter during our stay in Palm Desert. Bougainvillea don’t grow here in Reno and certainly not in the snowy cold weather we’re experiencing right now but they are abundant down in the desert.

Bougainvillea

Sometimes,
when you’re aware,
life hurls its beauty
in your face.

Nature you know
so well
comes of age in
her seduction.

Color mounts
surrounding walls,
invades the senses with
its brilliance,

fondles, tantalizes,
coaxes you till you
understand her message,
surrenders

her loveliness into
your hands
so you will
linger for awhile.

I fell in love with bougainvillea when I was traveling in southern Europe–and so wish it would grow in Montana for me and Reno for you! I so enjoyed this piece it inspired–particularly “hurled,” such a great word in your phrase. Thanks for sharing this one!

And linger we must but oftentimes we don’t. We take the beauty for granted more often than not. Nature is to be appreciated for the respite it does offer us! Thanks Liv 🙂

    “her loveliness into
your hands” That is what we did with the flowers!! Reminds me of childhood, when we would try to rub them onto our hands and then get them all colorful.. Silly days 🙂

Lovely Bougainvillea and a beautiful poem to match them.

These grow all year round here and planted along compound walls.
What a pretty sight they make in their various colors.

    Yes….. Very well said..
We call these here- “paper flower”, that’s the translation..

    fondles, tantalizes,
    coaxes you till you
    understand her message..

That’s how nature plays with us. we often turn a blind eye and live in ignorance and often denial too..

    Well Done Victoria.. 🙂

Well this caught my eye because that is one of my favorite “flowers”. I have two growing in my hot, humid yard here in Florida–the bright fuschia and a salmon orange color. They’re in full bloom now.

A lovely description of their “in your face” beauty!
