Saints
Beneath the scarlet tupelo,
a concrete Buddha waits,
listens to the sound
of falling leaves.
Nearby, a maple reaches down,
shelters St. Francis and the quail
scurrying for seed at the statue’s feet.
The Saint watches.
Wintertime, blanketed by snow,
Francis asks his friend:
“What do you see, Buddha?”
“I hear life surging below.”
“But is there food for my friend?”
Francis begs.
“There is nothing more
than what has always been.”
Superb work. I came from a High School where St. Francis is our patron and Buddhism is something that intrigued me in College. I love their interaction.

It is true that the good and evil of life never seems to change, eh? Very nicely written poem.

What’s best about this is how subtly and accurately you captured the two of them. It’s so subtle I almost didn’t notice: Buddha “waits” while Francis “watches”; Buddha “hears” and “listens” while Francis “sees”. Buddha is (un)concerned with what is, Francis is thinking about what might be (for others). What Francis asks, and what Buddha answers, is perfectly in their characters.
Pair that with some well-chosen details about the setting, and you have this beauty. Clean, and needle-precise, and more and more telling as you dig further in. Excellent stuff. 🙂

Intriguing n ironically, some things never change.. they keep happening at intervals with a different face masked on!
We need to learn the art of handling those- often again n again!!

The calm of the Buddha and the all knowing answer, “There is nothing more than what has always been,” speaks volumes as St. Francis searches. Isn’t that the wisdom of the ages? If you seek something it is usually found close or within. Thanks for sharing.
