This is a response poem–an answer back to Robert Frost’s poem that I used as an example in Meeting the Bar at dVerse Poets’ Pub. It’s a fun exercise you might want to try some time when nothing seems to be happening with your muse. Choose a poem and respond to the poet. That’s all there is to it.

Fire and Ice

Some say the world
will end in fire.
Some say in ice.
From what I’ve tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice
I think I know enough of hate
to say that for destruction ice
is also great
and would suffice.

I fear Mother Earth will die of neglect,

Well written response to Mr. Frost, but I do hope you’re wrong! I hope the earth and her inhabitants are as miraculous and resilient as I imagine them to be. (It’s nice over her in Lorna’s World.) 😉

mother earth won’t die of neglect. mother earth can take care of herself. mother earth can destroy us with ice and fire. we are just destroying our home.

though the collective we doing the destruction doesn’t have much say nor know much in non-debatable facts to pressure changes, yet… 😉

I think our relationship with the Earth is dying. The preveiling winds debase humanity as evil and destructive; we act accordingly, destroying and polluting as a guilty pleasure to be traded between nations. -Q

oh i would hate a quiet dying of the earth victoria.. it’s even more cruel than dying through fire and ice.. and our beautiful planet haven’t deserved it at all…and the cruelest thing is..i think you are right…and it gives me goosebumps..

i don’t believe the earth will die quietly
i don’t how, or when
but momma earth’s been through a lot of changes getting to where she’s at now, and further changes she will cope with anew ( though we might not like them all )
may we mend our intentional and unintentional meddlings with our earthly paradise

You are probably right, Victoria, though the way rioters set fire to shops, vehicles and homes, and the large number of earthquakes we’ve seen this year, could lean the other way.

Cool idea and I like your response. I think the Earth is dying by denial–wide-open-eyes-watching-it-happen denial and neglect.

Neglect or over strained by us. It will die when no one takes notice, so I think I agree with you: the earth might die quietly.

Mother earth is forgiving.Waiting to extend goodness to man on earth. But we not waiting for destruction. We destroy ourselves. The green house effect,war and destruction.the tendency of religious conflicts. It is our choice,really!

well, rats…posting the scansion of both poems, looses the highlighting and embolding.
but there is a difference.

Sad and resonant response, Victoria. Some days I think so too–then I think She is a lot stronger than we are and will make it in the end. Loved your prompt, and all the poetry it inspired, and hope you and yours have a most happy holiday.

I think you wrote a strong response poem. And like Mary I think you are right. If we human beings don’t come to our senses – and soon – this earth will slowly die, long before ice or fire will end it all. On that note I wish you a Merry Christmas!

Victoria, I think you are right. Earth will quietly die in the same that we will die,. slowly, hardly noticed until the VERY end that then humankind will wonder why they didn’t notice, didn’t take heed. So much to think about with your words.
