sometimes there are no rules

sometimes there are no rules

as when the call of doves defy the wintry morn
or roses flower on desert sand and
in the furrow of a craggy mountain.

sometimes there are no rules–
as when sweet love blossoms in wrinkled bodies
or when the heart knows ecstasy before the face of death.

sometimes there are no rules–
and thus i fly on silver wings
to touch these moonlit branches.

oh, can you hear the songs of stars?

Title taken from Mary Oliver’s Poem: “Three Things to Remember”

A slow start to writing this year, so I turned to Mary Oliver for a jump-start. It’s been a crazy few weeks.

  2. What a wonderful poem… I really like to use another poet to jump-start my writing… it could be a line, or the style… Recently I have read a little by Carol Ann Duffy, and I can so recommend her poems too…

  5. Victoria, you may have had a difficult dry spell, but your re-entry poem is a beautiful and gentle emergence.

You have it right; sometimes there are no rules. Victoria, this poem explains that to me through nature. Thank you!

This is just lovely, Victoria, and I like the idea of using the line of another poet to jumpstart our writing. Viv did that this week too. I hope your life will calm down a bit and give you some rest.

Ah, Victoria; this does indeed have the ‘feeling’ of a Mary Oliver inspired poem. Indeed, I can see her writing about love blossoming in wrinkled bodies as well as hearing the songs of stars. Mary Oliver is one of my go-to poets as well when I need to find inspiration during a ‘dry’ spell!
