Dark Night

Awake ,
I listen to the soughing
of breezes
in palms,
the hooting of
a distant owl.

Midnight blue seeps
into the room,
into the womb
of my loneliness.

I listen to silence,
to your absence,
lulled,
into sleep
by the soughing
of wind.

You’re invited to join us at dVerse Poets where we are invited to write a quadrille, a poem of exactly 44 words, using the word “Lull.”

The soughing wind and the owl add to the lonely feeling here. I didn’t know that word “soughing” either.

One of my favorite sounds is of the wind blowing, when all else is quiet. This reminds me of this so much! Wonderful!

Yes, kudos for sending us all on a word search. Your second stanza is killer, as noted by others. Interesting how many of us delivered strong dramatic messages, not jumping the limerick shark.

    Stunning words.
“Soughing” is new to me also 🙂
Listening to your loved one’s absence….I was almost put into this situation (my piece addresses this situation)….I cannot imagine the loneliness of lying without my loved one. You’ve described this emotion so very very poignantly.

There is the loneliness and the absence, but still the idea of being lulled to sleep by the soughing of breezes sounds very peaceful to me.

  21. Soughing – sounds like sighing which is so much in that tone, in the absence in your words.. Like you said – a whole story in 44 words. Beautiful

  23. Beautiful and sadly sweet. And I learned a new word: soughing. I always love learning a new word via a dVerse poem. Peace, Linda
