white egret rising

white egret rising

in the middle of nowhere
i wait
in utter new moon darkness

a distant light
shines on rippling waters
from which the rustle of wings
the call of a loon
disrupts the silence

a blur of silver
ascends
blazes
white on black
amid late summer torpor

still
i wait

Today for Poetics over at dVerse we are invited to use the Moon as a theme. Thursday’s New Moon approaches and it is said that this is a time for new beginnings. The pub will  be open today, Tuesday, at 1500 EDT. Please join us. The moon is such a great poetic inspiration.

Doing some very late commenting for this prompt….sorry.
This is stunning. Especially love this line… “in utter new moon silence”. A beautiful scene you’ve created and so concisely.

Nothing more beautiful, while camping, than to hear the call of the loon across a silent lake.

I like the scene you painted – the moon, the night, the silence, and the call of the bird. It is comforting and magical.

I like the title, it evokes the stillness and mystery of the Moon, does it rise or do we fall to greet it?

Computers can be frustrating; comments are essential. This brief beauteous piece is stunning, like a new perspective from you; it has a freshness, like a lily fresh opened, dripping with iridescent dew bubbles.

YEAH for comments! Your poems are always so wonderful — I felt cheated when they were closed last time 😦
This is WONDERFUL! It takes me back to the Adirondacks…the waters, the loon and rustle of wings. In about two weeks we will be back in our beloved Provincetown and I shall be on the deck, staring at the moon over the water again. Your imagery is so perfect here!

In a brief poem you painted quite a scene..before dawn, the awakening of the day and wetlands and the lovely loons. Bravo!

Great! I love this poem. It is rather Japanesey in tone. So of course, I think it is marvelous! Still I wait…I just truly do love this poem of yours. I hope you will include it in the dVerse anthology. The image of the mon as a white egret rising is delicious.
