Intaglio-2
there are seasons—
times when pain is etched
upon our copper-souls
with a sharp stylus
moments when the heavy
shroud of sorrow
oppresses those we love
like those black clouds
rolling into our meadow
like the slow flow of the river
fighting winter chill
Please join us at dVerse Poetics where we are poem-ing about TIME. I’ve chosen to use the Quadrille form and included the word Time. The doors open at 3:00 PM EST.
Thank you for writing in a simple and searing way that reaches into the cold blackness (for me), a place to visit but hopefully not to stay.

Hard to “like”such pain, yet your metaphors bring clarity into the pathos. You give witness and it touches my heart.

Love how you describe those times of pain in 4 different ways. Could be a mini Cubist poem.

I like the last two lines: “like the slow flow of the river
fighting winter chill”. Just like a river fighting the icing grip of Winter. That’s gripping!

You remind me of the reason for the season, and that so many of us are boomers, already into the autumn or winter of our own lives. Like Kim, I got hooked at the first stanza. For me now, my grandchildren remind me daily that at some point we need to step aside & let them build a new world.

I’m reminded that this merry season is anything but for many people. Your poem is timely in that way and very very heartfelt.

This is such a strong description of sorrow, and in the way you have used the metaphors of nature to describe…

And still there is something so profound in those times. Most of my greatest work rides on those winds that come from the place of pain.
