times when pain is etched
upon our copper-souls
with a sharp stylus
moments when the heavy
shroud of sorrow
oppresses those we love
like those black clouds
rolling into our meadow
like the slow flow of the river
fighting winter chill

I like the opening lines they are penned perfectly, I never thought of having copper souls yet it fits.

I like the last two lines: “like the slow flow of the river
fighting winter chill”. Just like a river fighting the icing grip of Winter. That’s gripping!

You remind me of the reason for the season, and that so many of us are boomers, already into the autumn or winter of our own lives. Like Kim, I got hooked at the first stanza. For me now, my grandchildren remind me daily that at some point we need to step aside & let them build a new world.
