The Artisan Paints Dawn

Ensconced upon my chair,
blanket-cocooned from cold,
I wait for Artist to appear.

In the East, first ray of light
peaks over hills,
dabs brushes heavy with pastel hues
upon my water-washed world.

Gold blurs into rose, blurs
into violet, periwinkle, blue
as night blurs into day
and I to wakefulness.

Then, in the distance,
a flash of white
flares ‘cross the lightening sky
and egret alights upon the bank
in prayerful waiting pose.

And I, to life, arise.

Oh, I hope you take a few minutes to visit dVerse Meeting the Bar where Bjorn treats us to an artistic prompt on Impressionism, a school of art that arose in the late 1800’s and endures to this day. He shares the best, most succinct explanation of the art form that I remember, and I used to be a museum docent.

I like the anticipation as you waited for the “Artist” to begin. The third stanza really exemplifies the prompt…a beautiful blending of words and colours.

Good morning, Victoria! I’m up and about on this Friday morning, and reading your poem has boosted my spirits. I too am:
    ‘Ensconced upon my chair,
    blanket-cocooned from cold’.
I also waited for that Artist in the early hours and now, here you are, with ‘pastel hues / upon my water-washed world’.
I love the blurring of colours and the blurring of night into day, leading up to the appearance of the egret – stunning!

I liked the idea of night blurring into day as one awakens. This twists around my usual perception of day blurring into night.

This is so lovely, Victoria. It is the essence of watercolor painting to me. And that last line? Superb. It’s like a prayer or affirmation.

There is the dawn, but for some no awakening; mine came late in life n the heels of disability–two decades of can’t do what I used to. You take to impressionism entirely–love your word strokes. I like the line /where vines of heartache now creep/.

I see the periwinkle blue and the almost sepia feeling and blush hue. When you add the bird, it’s like crowning the morning.

  23. Beautiful description of dawn and awakening. I love the trees that surround our house but they preclude enjoying sunrise and sunset. It’s an exchange, I guess. I enjoyed your words!
