Biography

Victoria C. Slotto

Registered nurse, kidney survivor, novelist, poet

Author of countless poems, articles, and short stories, Victoria C. Slotto enchants readers again by creating a new world to explore in the genre of women’s fiction.

Victoria C. Slotto has been writing poetry and short stories for years, but it wasn’t until her marketing position for a local hospice was eliminated that she went home and told her husband she wanted to write full-time. Having had her poems and short stories published in multiple magazines and journals, Victoria was even then no stranger to effectively gaining and entertaining an audience. She was ready to write novels.

Her writing has been described as poetic, with a style that is similar to famous authors such as Nicholas Sparks and Jodi Picoult. Her subject matter has been attributed to her years working as a nurse and dealing with “end-of-life” issues. She has been able to create new worlds within modern settings to show readers that no matter how dark the cloud, there is always a silver lining.

With her first novel, Winter is Past,Victoria used her real life experience as a nurse and as a recipient organ donor patient to create the character of Claire. In Claire’s story,Victoria pulls at readers’ hearts and challenges the mind by exploring the character’s emotions, such as fear of loss, and showing how an inner strength is the greatest of survival skills.

Kidney Transplant

In 1996, Victoria was diagnosed with end-stage renal failure. She was given a second chance at life in 2001 when a co-worker, Paula Dinkins, gifted her with a kidney. It was this experience that provided the inspiration for Winter is Past. When Paula offered to be her donor,Victoria asked herself over and over again, “What if…?” “What if something were to happen to Paula?” “What if something happened to Paula’s children and they needed one of her kidneys?” Paula calmed those fears by saying, “I believe God put me here to help you, and I can’t believe he wouldn’t have someone out there to help them.”

Nursing and Convent Years

Victoria entered a Catholic convent at the age of seventeen and spent twenty-eight years serving as a Registered Nurse in the Order. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing Education and a Master of Arts in Administration. Her work has been primarily in fields that dealt with death and dying: Hospice, AIDS, Long Term Care and Home Health Care. She provided direct patient care and served in administrative positions.

The last two years of her active nursing career,Victoria was a marketing representative and community educator for hospice. For a number of years she served as adjunct faculty at Orvis School of Nursing,University of Nevada,Reno. She was also employed part-time by the University’s Nutrition Department as part of a Federal Grant as the lead editor and co-author of a physician/patient education workbook about lifestyle change and weight management. She has lived in many parts of the United States and spent three years living and working in France.

Victoria is currently a full-time writer. Her second novel, The Sin of His Father, is the story of a young man who learns on his mother’s deathbed that he was conceived in an act of rape. Driven by fear of who he may become, he must then find redemption through forgiveness.

Victoria resides with her husband, David, in Reno, NV, but spends several months of the year in Palm Desert,CA. Her hobbies include painting, knitting, jewelry-making, golf, and spoiling her two dogs Sparky and Zoe.

Victoria C. Slotto, on why she writes:

“Life gives us experiences, teaches us lessons, gifts us with wisdom that is not for us to hoard selfishly. Most people accomplish this through parenting. I have no children, so I write. I give birth to books and poetry.” – Victoria Slotto, 2012

Became aware of you via dVerse. Remarkable story Victoria. I understand your gratiude for your renewed opportunity at life, I admire your desire to help others through your writing. I was given the gift of renewed life at age 70, on April 14th, 2017, in the form of an emergency Pacemaker implantation after my heart had stopped, while in the hospital, recovering from an angioplasty operaion. I have written since age 16, initially lyrics for my numerous r&b and rock bands. The lyrics evolved into poetry and short stories. I have attempted several novels, but my ADD makes sustaining concentration on drawn out plot development extremely difficult. I get bored, then distracted, and must move on to a fresh concept. Most of my short stories began as attempts at novels. I can hyper-concentrate when writing poetry, but then I need to be on to fresh ideas. Anyway, I find your background interesting Victoria, and your life choices admirable.

  5. Victoria, I cant find a way to email you, but had to tell you that your experience just being near the Dalai Lama’s shoes, and feeling that jolt,, impresses me. Wow. His energy is such that even his shoes retain it. I once saw him in person, in a small auditorium in Vancouver, at the Vancouver Peace Summit. Just being in the same room, breathing the same air felt like such a blessing and privilege. He was looking frail and that was several years ago. I am now reading his My Plea To the World, which is wonderful. What a rarified being he is. Thanks so much for your lovely comment and I loved hearing about the jolt from his shoes.

  9. Thank you for sharing and really hope your writing is going well. It has been a pleasure to read some of your poems ‘time well spent’ was I believe an epithet written for a famous writer. Another link apart from my writing is my daughter is a nurse and has at times struggled in facing the death of some of her patients. It is a tough job but she has built up more of those inner resources that you show and so skilfully write about.

You have an impressive resume. I must commend you on such a giving career. To those that have not experienced the care of a Hospice nurse I assure you they are some of the most beautiful people God put on this earth. I have met many and I loved them all, When my Susie passed no one was there but me. The nurse walked in just a moment after, I was in shock I suppose. I knew what was going to happen but knowing did not make it any easier. The nurses were so kind to me. She came in seeing that lost look of desperation that only a Hospice nurse could know and she hugged me and as my silent tears fell she too shed tears. I was in the midst of the worst event of my life and she took the time to show me compassion and to let me know I wasn’t alone. (I’ll stop, getting misty eyed) I just wanted you to know how much I and many others out there appreciate you and everyone else who do so much to ease the suffering of the sick as well as the ones that love them. I look forward to reading your work. Thank you for being you. -JM

    Hello Victoria,

forgive me for using your email AND using comments on ‘about’ on your blog – I NEVER do, except for the people I would like to feature on the ‘Ten of the Best’ Blog. Please feel free to remove this from your comments after you’ve read it!

Firstly thank you for your continued support on my own blog, http://kolembo.wordpress.com.

I have seen that you are support for many, many poets on the internet, not just wordpress, that you give up hours on this and are committed to being honest, yet encouraging improvement.

You are authentic, serious about the truth, and un-compromising about the SPIRIT in which people say the things they do, and live the lives they live.
This is true power, and there is true power in the vision that you carry.

The reason I write to you on email, is that we would be very honoured to carry your poem CLOSET in July’s issue (our very first!) of “Ten of the Best” – short poetry.
You can find the website here – http://tenofthebestshortpoetry.wordpress.com

Of course we need your permission to do so, and I hope you will give it to us.
We have no regulations as far as copyright is concerned, all rights rest with you unconditionally.

Also, we blog the entire Ten of the Best for the month under it’s own URL and as a grouping so that your poem will not appear with it’s own URL and will form far less than automated searches for duplicated work on the internet require – info for you if you are familiar with the way the internet works.

This is so that appearing on Ten of the Best does not interfere in anyway how you chose to use the poem – beyond it appearing on your blog as it does.

If you accept, we would like to know if you have a particular image you would like us to consider with your piece, if we can use what you already have (we will check for copyright issues ourselves so you are not held responsible), or if you’d prefer to see what we think your piece inspires!

Also, if you can write a VERY short bio – like 2 lines, in anyway that you want, with whatever information that you would like to give of yourself, for us to tag onto the end of the poem, we would be grateful – along with the website that you’d like readers to be directed to if you feel you would appreciate their direct traffic.

We very much are of the opinion that your poem is clearly one of Ten of the Best we have seen this month.

Please let us know when you can,

    Kreemer.

We indiciduals who write seem to have such rich lives of experience. Perhaps that’s why it must spill out onto the page, just too much to hold in? Just wanted to stop by and learn a bit more about you, and I have. We do have much in common, but I only thought about the convent in parochial grade school. That changed quickly when I hit public high school. Writing has always been my desire in life (since the age of about 5) and one day I hope to write a novel….meantime, I’m trying to keep my pencil sharp by writing the odd bit of poetry every now and then!

I hope you have a GREAT weekend – and thank you for the inspiration!
