Monday Morning Writing Prompt–Flash Fiction

How well I could write if I were not here!

Because I’ve been away for the better part of the week, I’m falling back on one of my earlier posts for this Monday’s writing prompt. I hope it will help you jump-start your week.

Flash fiction is a fun genre to work with. It challenges your ability to write tightly, to eliminate extraneous words and present a terse plot in a maximum of 1000 words or less. To be effective you’ll want to choose active verbs and descriptive nouns. This will allow you to use minimal adjectives and adverbs. Don’t forget, your still need a story arc: beginning, middle and ending.

Today, try writing a short piece of flash fiction of 100 words or fewer using this opening line:

The sunrise was brilliant that morning. Such an odd day for them to…

If you like, post your work in comments. I will give it a few days before I share mine with you. I don’t want to influence your own creative genius. Have fun. Enjoy the process!

“The sunrise was brilliant that morning. Such an odd day for them to …” have all of us down here at the murder scene. The Captain new most of us went to church today. Still I’ve been up all night on a stack-out of the victim’s house watching his wife, so I was use to the slight chill in the air. I was really not lessoning to Captain about no new evidence in the murder. Mary and I had thought this out for a long time. After I retired we were moving to a different state and be gone forever.

The sunrise was brilliant that morning. Such an odd day for them to enjoy a casual walk by the sea. Hand-in-hand and bare of foot they walked, hardly mindful of the appointment yet to keep. It was perfect: her dear love, an infinite ocean, and God’s turquoise canopy above. They stopped a moment, breathing in the damp air and watching the waves toss up stone and shells and glass. She blinked and breathed. The sky had become a huppah and honoring tradition, the man stepped on the wine glass, breaking it, reminding them how very fragile human happiness can be.

Monday Morning Writing Prompt – Flash Fiction

The sunrise was brilliant that morning. Such an odd day for them to be feeling so anxious; but the laborious suffering of childbirth had begun. They knew that the physical suffering would soon reward them with a glorious gift.
The emotional distress of this new experience was weighing on them profusely. They wanted to enjoy this moment even though they were extremely emotional. This was what they had planned for. This is what they had been waiting nine months for.
Soon a precious child would be joining them on this bright sunny morning.

The sunrise was brilliant that morning. Such an odd day for them to be dressed so heavily. They trudged on, somewhat happy to finally see a building.
He thought it was rather sad that in these days of technology, it was actually possible for a bus to roll off the road and still not be found twenty-four hours later. It had been a tough twenty-four hours for them, climbing up the escarpment away from the partially submerged bus.
But at last, there was a building ahead, and a chance of rescue for whoever was still alive.

The sunrise was brilliant that morning. Such an odd day for them to be looking for the elusive ape man known in these parts to have only been spotted in the wee hours of morning before daybreak.

They set up their high-tech equipment that would provide them with the sounds that the creatures made that were inaudible to the human ear. Each, with earphones tightly covering their ears and concentrating intently, was caught totally unaware when brutally grabbed from behind. The last thing they heard was a piercing, howling snarl as they became early breakfast for the mysterious ape man

This is a true story that just happened! (Exactly 100 words.)

The sunrise was brilliant that morning. Such an odd day for them to hear a deafening explosion. A minute before, a jet passed overhead. Over breakfast, they wondered if it had exploded in mid-air.

The weather suddenly turned dark and foreboding. The radio broadcast the latest developments in the Libya.

    They shared toast and gratitude.

Some time later, they discovered that the sound had been thunder. A bolt of lightening had struck their largest tree, traveled down a ground transformer, cut a trench as it followed underground wiring and entered their home silently.

Every appliance in their home was disintegrated.
