Doing Something I Loathe Doing

As many of you know, just before Christmas, my first book was published by Lucky Bat Books. It is available through links on my website and here on my blog. There are two reasons I have not done much, if anything, to get it out there. The first was just the busy-ness of my life these past few weeks, but the second is more ingrained in my personality. I do not like to or know how to self-promote. Many of you know that I was a nun for many years and self-effacement was (supposed to be) the name of the game.

And so I’m turning to you for help.

Winter is Past is the story of a woman who has dealt with a subtle fear throughout her life. She’s unaware of the reason behind her anxiety but when she’s faced with her best friend and kidney donor’s health crisis–cancer in her remaining kidney–she must uncover and deal with her fear of loss.

The book will appeal, for the most part, to women and to those who read authors such as Jodi Picoult or Nicolas Sparks, to health care providers and those dealing with issues related to organ transplantation. It is written with an eye to stimulating discussion in book clubs and similar formats  (there are questions for that purpose at the end of the narrative). While it is not Christian fiction, it will speak to those who read that genre (my first agent wanted to market it as such). It has a message of hope and survival. Perhaps, even if this is not the type of work you would enjoy, you know someone (wife, girlfriend?) who might like to read it.

Here is a heart-warming comment from a friend who began reading it yesterday:

Last evening I began your novel, at chapter 12 I made myself stop reading. I wanted to save what was coming next, like you put away a last piece of chocolate to savor later on…

You have a WONDERFUL way with words my friend. Having visited Reno many times to see John’s parents I could visualize the Truckee rushing its banks, and see the pictures you pointed so clearly with your dialogue. I LOVE your book!!!. Your characters are real and believable, I already have a dislike of Lauren!! And Helene needs to stop being so cranky!!

Yesterday… we went full tilt for the whole day!! Settling down with your book was my reward. I’m looking forward to what will come next.

Joan

If you do buy it and can write a review on Amazon.com or on Kindle, I’d be most grateful. And I hope it will be a satisfying read for you. Thank you so much.

Good luck, Victoria. I know how very hard this is. I’ll definitely get a copy, probably on kindle as I really prefer that format these days. Best of luck. If you get any great ideas for promotion, let me know. It was very good to explain who would like it. I am so bad at all that as well. K.

  3. This doesn’t sound like the kind of book I would read, but from your description two people I know immediately came to mind. I plan to share this with both of them. 🙂 Peace, Linda

I guess your book is partly autobiographic. About the kidney transplant I mean. Things we have personally experienced make a good story however traumatic. Best wishes for the success of this book. What about your next one ? A successful blogger and author who was also a nun sounds like a good story to me. Write it from the inside out. Blessings.

Victoria, I have my poetry notepad sitting right next to me and on it is a small quote (rather than poem) that I put under my category of ‘Soul Prayer’. I haven’t put it on my blog yet, but it seems that it was waiting for you…

“Let me live with the essence of ‘Gift’; to flow love into the rivers of light as it has gracefully been flowed to me.” – A Soul Prayer by Angela Jane Grace.

I too have struggled all my life with self promotion, but now I see it as sharing that love (for that is what creates my work – and your book) back into the rivers of light within the universe. I see it as my pay back for all the love and divine miracles I have received in my life, especially when things were a little tough. And the way I ‘work’ the money (if people are paying) is the same thing: they are paying into the flow too and I am capturing some of it to do with what my soul feels right – perhaps affording me the time to write more books/poetry to bring a little light into people’s hands and through their eyes.

You may be lighting candles within people’s souls or perhaps even changing their lives, the extent of which you may never know whilst on this earth plane. By promoting your book, you are giving people the opportunity…

Many congratulations on your book publication!

Promoting yourself is never easy, but here’s what I think: Do it from love. Let the fear hang out in the background if it wants to (and it probably will) but let your love of what you do come to the forefront. What i mean is – find the place where you really love that novel and speak from there. Not because you want to sell it, but because you are really excited about it. People shy away from sales pitches but are drawn toward excitement. Just a thought…. And kudos for writing this post and sharing anyway!

I am ordering your book today and I can’t wait to read it! 🙂

I’m a bit preoccupied at the moment but perhaps I could re-post your post? I will also let my Creative Writing colleagues at the local university (where I used to work) know.

  10. I would like to make a post about your book /at some point next week/ on my blog, if that’s ok. I don’t have more visitors than you do probably, but it’s an advertisement, you never know who might read the post. Let me know if it’s ok. I would like to include the image of the cover, little summary of the book and few words from you about the process of writing the book …

Victoria, I promise to order your book as the first for my Kindle, which is waiting at my daughter’s for my visit at the end of March. You may have had to grit your teeth to promote yourself, but you did it very well. I’m looking forward to reading Winter is Past – and experiencing the reality of the title!

    • Ah, Viv…thank you so much. I’m so happy for you that you will have a Kindle soon. They are so wonderful and make so many worlds accessible to us, as does the world of blogging.
Hang in there. I know what those winters in the Northwest of France are like. Gloom!

Victoria, you are amazing. I haven’t been a nun and find self-promotion almost impossible. Good for you for overcoming fear. Didn’t you say that is what this story is about?

I will be happy to do that. Because of my location, the shipping for me is ridiculous, so I order books locally and they take a little time.

I also wanted to say that I see you doing so much for the writing community. I love your heart, the philosophies that have peeked out of you and the way you comment and respond with sincerity. I recently had some awards given to me which I had to give out. Well what a horrible process that can be…choosing from all I love. So I want you to know that I gave a Candle Lighter Award to Tracy Todd (you’ll see why) but if it were not for her presence, I would have given that one to you. You give with so much love and that love shows in so many ways. The encouragement you give around the blogosphere alone is incredible.

So I wanted you to know this…

    With love, Amy

    • Wow, Amy. This comment made me happy even if I never sell a single book. The thing I value most is being able to touch other people and receive the wonderful gifts and insights that they have to offer. You are one of my champions in this regard. Do you ever wonder what would happen if our world leaders started blogging art and inspiration? As for the award, I find it difficult because of time issues to work them. Your comment is award enough, and you presence in my life.
