Sacraments

Purple petals dance
with solemn passion,
swirl in a breeze
filled with promise.

Sacred fireflies
shine in the wild night,
reach into the doleful void
to dazzle.

A dead leaf swirls in
the center of a whirling
torrent, disappears
down the storm drain.

Earth convulses while
blizzards howl,
morphs in an empty afternoon
beneath hoary skies .

Sursum corda.

The word Sacrament comes from the Latin, to make holy. A sacrament is considered to be an outward sign of grace. Sursum corda is Latin for lift up your heart.

Simply beautiful. You’ve found those outward signs of grace and presented them for us so evocatively here. Thanks for reading my “Sacrament” poem. Love the blog!

  3. This is gorgeous! I agree with A.B. Thomas. Your words create a painting of beautiful images. I love these lines:
    “Earth convulses while
    blizzards howl,
    morphs in an empty afternoon
    beneath hoary skies .”

And the Latin touch cinched it!

I love the feel of this piece. I love fireflies. As a child my brother and I would smush them on us so we’d glow. I know it’s gross but to a kid it was the idea of glowing. Great poem

You brought the burning bush to the images you described. It was spiritual in the most organic way.

A lot to like here: the wonderful musicality, the way tiny moments of grace within nature are unveiled, the sense that in each season the small is absorbed into the larger.

All these seemingly insignifigant everyday occurrences are sacrements–all outward signs of grace. I see it.

    Thanks for showing this, Victoria.

Very nice! The definitions add the touch needed for those who don’t know. The words dance across the cold ground like little ice sprites, I do enjoy how this is woven together. Makes me dread the twenty first as well, Solstice and all but it is never permanent. It will get lighter and full of life soon. Thanks so much for sharing with us!

The seasons pass, and in their perpetual change and motion we find our own restlessness, and our own resolutions. A lovely bit of mood and image, Victoria. Enjoyed it, and the Latin tag.

I love it. Each stanza perfect is in itself, but considered in light of the title and coda they are sandwiched between, each becomes part of a far more powerful whole.
