perfection isn’t
raucous stellar jay punctuates the silence
sets ablaze the dead maple with electric blue.
i miss the lauds of mockingbird
humbly clothed in gray and white.

Simple but rather dramatic in it’s way. Well done, Victoria. I like it.

Beautifully done Victoria in not so many words. That’s great!

When I see a Jay I always think of Mark Twain’s “What Stumped the Blue Jays. … “Now, on top of all this, there’s another thing; a jay can out-swear any gentleman in the mines”. …
Wonderful contrast of the two birds.

I do so like this. Using the birds with their plumage, voices – wonderful and interesting contrasts. Simple and right on point.

Who is to say what perfection is? Your poem really gets to the heart of that question with surgical precision. I am always in awe of how you make words bend to your will, V. 🙂 ❤

Ha. So you have a preference for music. I hear you. I would hope to find morethng beyond beauty, beyond what is skin deep, you know.

I think the pictures, particularly of the mockingbird, really bring together the contrasts. The grey and white are absolutely majestic despite the modest feign.

The colourful plumage is not really what gives a great singer. The jay might have its color but the mockingbird have the voice.

Perfection IS this little poem.

Great contrasts of color and sound. Perhaps the mockingbird applauds the performances, and is so, the bluejay misses it too.

never much thought about the call of different birds….though I do enjoy when you can pickup the call and response…sometimes I wonder what they’re saying.
I do like the contrast in the first stanza of the jay puncturing the silence.

I like how you appeal to our senses through colors and sounds, Victoria. ‘sets ablaze the dead maple with electric blue.” – my favorite line!

repeats what is said.. by birds.. the mask

I enjoyed the variation in the sounds of the two birds. I really love the look of the stellar jay.

Wonderfully clever to give us contrasting images to heighten the opposition. We never see jays in W. WA.

Love the contrast between raucous and silence….it brings to mind a staccato effect….the raucous punctuating the silence in a sort of staccato sort of way. Lovely effect!
