“L ” is for Lauds and Loons
In a former life
I chanted Lauds
soon upon awakening:
morning prayer,
quiet time and
praise of the Creator.
Now I join my voice
to songs of birds,
early morning joy.
In winter dark
when hearts are cold
I go within,
remember how it was
when not so stark.
Listen to the call of loons.
Note: Lauds is the morning prayer chanted in Catholic monasteries and religious communities comprised for the most part of a varying selection of psalms.

Loons are so enchanting. Listening to them is one of my favorite parts about visiting canada. Love this poem! I think you’d like this post of mine: http://gnarlyoak.wordpress.com/2010/10/21/coyotes/

Loved the references made here…
And the general optimistic nature of the poem…
“remember how it was
when not so stark.
Listen to the call of loons” — Particularly liked these lines a lot!! That’s a super cool message really!

Really a special poem! Love the “tremolo” cry of the loon. I didn’t realize some of the others belonged to the loon.
Attended Lauds at Santa Barbara before the Benedictine monastery burned a few years ago in “the” fires.

Wow, I didn’t realize that monastery was involved in the fires. How sad.
